The Impact

Ruleville Memorial Park (Ruleville, MS)

"The City of Ruleville is so thankful to Good Neighbor Pharmacy and KaBOOM! for brining such an amazing play opportunity to our community. It has really made such a big difference! Every time I walk or drive by, the playground is filled with kids. There are no other playgrounds in the area, and I’m not entirely sure what kids did before the playground existed. I can tell you that they were never outside! I now see kids everywhere – playing on the playground, riding their bikes, playing outdoor games and just enjoying outdoor activities.

In September, we held a 5K Run/Walk that started right by the playground and ended downtown. The oldest participant was 80 and the youngest was 8 years old. What was amazing was that 60 kids participated in the event! The trainers at the Sunflower Wellness Center encouraged the kids to get involved, and then had a play event for all of the kids at the playground following the event. It was truly incredible to see this level of participation in physical activity from our kids – it would never have happened without our amazing playground as a catalyst."

Bethel Acres Community Playground (Bethel Acres, OK)

"The community of Bethel Acres went through a lot during the tornados in May 2013. From Design Day to Build Day, I heard so many comments from folks who mentioned what this project has done for our community and how amazing it is to have a new space for everyone to come together. Seeing something ‘bright, beautiful and new’ is just what they said they needed, and even more importantly, we did it together."

El Sol Science and Arts Academy (Santa Ana, CA)

"This playground project truly mobilized and inspired the El Sol community. As parents, the comradery is now amazing. This project created a stronger bond among the parents, and we now feel more comfortable asking more parents and the broader community to participate in future events. I loved seeing the parents who participated in a school event for the first time! Now, they want to get more involved. The playground is heavily used every day from 8:30 am – 6:30pm. In the evenings, El Sol offers ESL classes to parents, and even some classes where they can earn college credits. On the weekends, we have a health clinic and decided to move it closer to the playground. Since doing so, the playground gets even more use by the community!

Children are on our campus for school or for community events or the clinic 7 days a week – the playground is a huge draw. I’m also proud to share that El Sol was voted California Charter school of the year! We are now getting a lot of attention from local politicians and potential parents. We are so proud to show off our new building and our beautiful playground! We are so thankful to Good Neighbor Pharmacy and KaBOOM! for helping us make this dream playground a reality for not just El Sol students, but for the whole Santa Ana community."

About the Initiative
According to KaBOOM!, kids today are spending less time playing outdoors than any previous generation of children, a fact that is having disastrous consequences on their health, achievement levels, and overall well-being. To fight this play deficit, KaBOOM! has mapped over 100,000 places to play, built more than 2,300 playgrounds, and successfully advocated for play policies in hundreds of cities across the country. KaBOOM! also provides communities with online tools to self-organize and take action to support play on both a local and national level.
