Eating habits have a direct impact on a person’s health. A healthy diet helps protect against many diseases, such as obesity, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and certain cancers. Healthy foods also boost the body’s immune system. Furthermore, age-related, harmful effects such as dry and dull skin, falling hair, and declining vision can be delayed by eating a nutritious diet.

The Basics

First, foods should be rich in fiber and nutrients. A range of foods from the vegetable, fruit, whole grain, and protein groups should be included in the diet. Five servings of fruits and vegetables are ideal.

Second, a person should eat only enough to satisfy hunger.

Third, eating correctly does not mean a person should deprive himself or herself of favorite foods – those foods, if unhealthy, just need to be consumed in moderation.

Smart eating becomes even more important for a person who has any known risk of developing or has been diagnosed with high blood pressure, high blood sugar, depression, heart disease, cancer, or other medical illnesses.
